People sometimes ask me what to look for in selecting a worship leader.
Although the choice of a worship leader should ultimately rest with the Lord-- and He may surprise us-- good worship leaders usually have certain earmarks.
Ron Kenoly has written an excellent article on this topic and I would like to share some of his thoughts with you, along with my own comments.
1. "Radically saved and consistently walking with Christ. Some churches, feeling desperate to improve their musical sound, may feel tempted to appoint worship leaders who have little or no spiritual foundation. While musical ability and experience can be a great asset, it should not be more important than a person's character and relationship with God"
This can be a very controversial statement. Lots of churches want the "best musicians" possible, in order to have a modern, cool sound. They will look the other way if the leader and musicians are not living a life style that honors God. The worship leaders in the Old Testament were "set apart" and it was a great honor to lead the people in worship. It can't be the latest gig or a fallback "nothing else was available"
God moves thru music and the people playing it as well. Most folks will be able to discern if the worship leader's heart and intention is in the right place. That is, to direct all of the attention to God and away from themselves.
Only when we are sold out to Jesus, and our lives are changed, will we be able to see God move in a powerful way. There can be no compromise when it comes to living for Him.
Our music needs to reflect that as well.
Blessings!
